Slides: Smooth Note Transitions

Before you play, tune your ukulele and use the tools below to set up your view and flow.

A slide connects two notes without lifting your finger. The pitch moves continuously from one fret to the next. Done well, it makes a melody sound effortless.

## How to Slide

Fret a note, pick it, then move your finger along the string to a higher or lower fret while maintaining enough pressure to keep the note sounding. Use the pad of your fingertip, not the very tip. Keep the movement even. Land cleanly on the destination fret.

## Ascending vs. Descending

Ascending slides (low fret to high) are easier to start with. Try sliding from the 5th to the 7th fret on the A string without re-picking. You should hear a smooth glide from E to F#.

Descending slides need slightly more consistent pressure since string tension decreases as you move down. Slide from the 7th to the 5th fret, keeping pressure steady throughout.

## Pick the Start or the End

You can pick the starting note and then slide, or slide into the target note unpicked. The first approach is clearer and works in most melodic contexts. The second is more expressive, common in blues and vocal-style playing.

## Using Slides in Phrases

A slide works best as a conscious choice. When you play a two-note step, try it both ways - picked separately and slid - and hear which fits the phrase. Notes in a flowing melodic line are good candidates. Notes at the start of a phrase usually stand alone.

## Practice Exercise

On the A string, play: 5th, 7th, 5th, 3rd fret. Then play it again with slides into each note after the first. Then reverse: descend with slides. Keep pressure consistent all the way. Practice until the movement stops requiring conscious thought.

## Questions and Answers

**How do you slide notes on ukulele?**
Pick a starting note, then move your fretting finger along the string to the target fret while maintaining enough pressure to sustain the pitch. Use the pad of the finger for smoother contact. You can pick the start, the end, or neither depending on the effect you want.

**Why does my ukulele slide sound scratchy or muted?**
Scratchiness means too much finger pressure - ease up slightly. A muted slide means contact broke mid-movement - press a bit more firmly. Find the middle: firm enough to sustain, light enough to move smoothly.
